The obvious person to talk to about this was Dead Gidge, but she’d disappeared. I knew it the second I walked into her room that night. Her cloud was gone.

I’d checked all through my head and under the bed and behind the curtains and in The Wardrobe Department and still didn’t see-slash-smell her. Maybe it was just that reincarnated beings couldn’t be in two places at once, but it still didn’t seem fair. How was I going to figure out how to help her without her helping me figure it out?

“What am I supposed to do, Gidge?” I threw one of her sparkly pillows against the wall and it bounced off a Picasso poster and knocked the poo vase onto the floor.

Pa opened the door and stuck his head in. “You drop something?” He was in his boxers and holding a large bowl of granola with two spoons sticking out.

“No. Why?”

Pa looked at the poo vase. Rotten-flower-slime drooled out the top onto the floor. “How did that get there, then?”

I put the vase on the nightstand, wiped my foot back and forth to sop up the slime and shrugged.

Normally, if he’d caught me lying like that he would have said, “Musta been a ghost,” and wiggled his eyebrows at me, but he didn’t this time. He just said, “Love you, Yardbird. Don’t stay up too late,” and closed the door.

I flopped onto the bed, my arms stretched out like an exasperated T. It reminded me of that trust game where you fall backwards and someone’s supposed to catch you.

Gidge had always been there to catch me.

Now I had to do the same for her, even if I didn’t know what she needed or how I was going to get it or even if I could. The word hopeless appeared in my head.

I let that sink in for a while.

Wrong, I thought.

“I got this,” I said out loud.

“Got what?” Pa said from outside my door.

“None of your business. Go to bed.” I had work to do.
